Q: Why do I need BigBen?
A: BigBen protects your phone from accidental use by locking keys. You can lock both manually by pressing a hot key and automatically after a set time-out. In locked state BigBen displays a large digital or analog clock, easily seen from a distance. BigBen also has extra services like missed call and SMS reminders, and hourly chime.

Q: Which phones is BigBen compatible with?
A: BigBen can be installed and executed on smartphones running on Symbian 7.0 with UIQ 2.0 or higher. Full compatibility is verified with the SonyEricsson P910, P900 and P800 phones.

Q: Why do you call it BigBen?
A: Our product features on-screen clock and hourly chime option. You can configure the program to act somewhat like the famous tower clock of London's Palace of Westminster, called the Big Ben. To do so, in Preferences set both the analog clock face and the hourly chime to Big Ben.

Q: How can I use BigBen with FrontView?
A: FrontView starts up BigBen automatically, so you do not need to launch it separately. When FrontView is running, you can not see BigBen's main view. In this case, BigBen's settings are accessible from the FrontView Preferences dialog, Function tab, Screensaver and Lock button.

Q: Can BigBen be started automatically?
A: Yes. The Autostart option can be set in Preferences/Other (off by default). Do not turn on autostart when you use BigBen with FrontView, as FrontView manages BigBen automatically.

Screensaver

Q: How can I change the clock?
A: In Preferences/Screen select the Screensaver you like. If you choose Analog clock, you can also set a face for it.

Q: Does displaying seconds at the bottom drain battery?
A: In screensaver state, date and seconds at the bottom of the screen are shown only when activity is detected, like when you touch the keys. Seconds display turns off automatically after a short period of inactivity. When your phone is completely idle, the screen is updated only once per minute, to allow the clock display correct time. You can set the screensaver to Blank for maximizing battery life.

Lock

Q: Can I change the time when my phone gets locked?
A: The lock activates and the screensaver becomes visible after an adjustable period of time. You can set the timeout in Preferences/Lock/Auto-lock timeout.

Q: How can I lock the phone without waiting for time-out?
A: The phone can be manually locked by pressing the Hot key assigned in Preferences/Lock. In the main view you can tap on the Lock toolbar button to lock immediately. Finally, closing the flip will lock the phone if it was previously unlocked by opening the flip.

Q: How do I unlock the phone?
A: To deactivate the lock, tilt (push) the jog dial away or towards, then push it inwards. This works in both flip modes. In flip closed mode you can also unlock by pressing the [ OK ] and [ * ] keys in succession. Opening the flip unlocks as well.

Q: Why do I have to unlock the phone twice, once with BigBen and then with the built-in lock?
A: Just disable the built-in (or any other installed) lock if you want to unlock with BigBen only.

Q: Why does the backlight activate when the screen is touched?
A: This is a system problem that could not be resolved in the current version of BigBen. A workaround is to switch on Automatic input lock in Control Panel / Display / Screen. This will inactivate the touch screen after the period you specify, and prevent the backlight coming up. The drawback is that you will need to unlock the phone twice.

Alerts

Q: I want my phone to make a signal every hour.
A: BigBen can do this for you. Set the Hourly chime to other than None in Preferences/Alert.

Q: How can I change the hourly chime?
A: Go to Preferences/Alert, in the Hourly chime option select "Browse", then select the sound file you want to play in every hour. You can also change what is played when selecting the BigBen chime option. To do this, replace the \system\apps\BigBen\BigBen.mp3 file.

Q: What are the big C and S letters that I see sometimes on the screensaver?
A: C stands for missed Call, and S is for unread SMS. These visual indicators are shown by the screensaver to remind you about unattended events. You can view the missed events as soon as you unlock the phone. You can also set audible reminders for these events. Select a sound in Preferences/Alert/Reminder sound, and set its repeat frequency in Sound interval. Check the Vibration option if you want your phone vibrate on reminders.

Q: I want to be reminded about missed SMS only.
A: In Preferences/Alert tap on the Events button, then uncheck the events you don't want to be reminded about.

Q: Can I switch off all reminders for a while?
A: Yes. Start unlocking the phone with the jog dial, then toggle the Reminders on/off in the Unlock menu.

Q: How to use the Sound times dialog?
A: The Sound times dialog lets you define time intervals when you want reminder sounds and the hourly chime to be played. By default the sounds are enabled for all times. To set a narrower time limit: (1) select the Day (or group of days), (2) set the Start time, and (3) set the End time. Be careful that End time must be later than Start time, otherwise sounds become inactivated for the given day or period (indicated by the Inactive check box).

Q: How can I activate sounds?
A: To activate sounds at all times, do the following in the Sound times dialog: (1) choose Every day in the Day selector, (2) set Start time to 00:00, (3) set End time to 23:59, (4) press Continue in the Sound times dialog, (5) press Done in the Preferences dialog. To select a narrower time limit for sounds, change the Start and End times. To have different sound time limits for a day, select that Day, then alter the Start/End times. Note that sounds for Reminder and Hourly chime are only played if you set the respective selectors in Preferences/Alert to something else than "None". Also note that you should exit the Preferences dialog by tapping the "Done" button, otherwise all your current changes are lost.

Q: Why always Monday is displayed when I open the Sound selector dialog?
A: Just because Monday is the first item in the Day selection list. You can select any other day or group of days, and then set the Start and End times for that (those) day(s).

Q: Why does the Sound selector dialog automatically set the Inactive flag?
A: That occurs when the Start time is later than the End time. In this case no sound is played for the given Day. To activate sounds, change the Start and/or End times, so the End time is later than the Start.
