General
Q: Why do I need BigBen?
A: BigBen protects your phone from accidental use by locking keys.
You can lock both manually and automatically after a set timeout.
In locked state BigBen displays a large digital or analog clock, easily seen from a distance.
BigBen also has extra services like reminders for missed calls and incoming messages,
and playing an hourly chime.
Q: Which phones is BigBen compatible with?
A: BigBen can be installed and executed on all smartphones running on Symbian 9.x with UIQ 3.x.
Q: Why do you call it BigBen?
A: Our product features on-screen clock and hourly chime option.
You can configure the program to act somewhat like the famous tower clock of London's Palace of Westminster, called the Big Ben.
To do so, in the Settings dialogs select Big Ben for both the Background and Hourly chime options.
Q: Can BigBen be started automatically?
A: No, except if you have a program that can autostart other applications at boot-time.
Q: Does BigBen drain the battery?
A:
Like every programs that are active all the time, BigBen consumes energy, which contributes to exhausting the battery.
BigBen is however optimized to avoid significant battery drain.
In screensaver state, the top and bottom texts are shown only when activity is detected, like when you touch the keys.
Seconds display turns off automatically after a short period of inactivity.
When your phone is completely idle, the screen is updated only once per minute,
to allow the clock display correct time.
If you are concerned about battery drain, you can set the screensaver to Blank for maximizing battery life.
Screensaver
Q: How can I change the clock?
A: In the Screen settings/Type dialog select the Clock you like.
Q: Why I can't always see the time?
A:
UIQ3 phones have a power saver feature that can disable all screen display.
You can change the feature in Backlight settings.
If you set the backlight to Auto, then the screen will be unlit and completely pitch-black after a certain time.
Enabling the power saver has the same effect, but you can alter its timeout.
Q: Why I don't see my custom text?
A:
On the top of screen BigBen either shows the next upcoming calendar/alarm event, or your custom text.
The custom text appears only if you disable displaying the Upcoming event.
You can change this in Screen settings/Text and also in the Unlock menu while the phone is locked.
Q: Why only a part of my custom image is shown?
A:
BigBen does not rescale the background image, so for correct full-screen display you need to use 240x320 pixels images.
Q: Can I prevent the backlight when the screen is touched?
A:
To minimize backlight while the phone is locked, turn on the Use device lock of BigBen,
and activate the lock using the built-in mechanisms.
Lock
Q: Can I change the time when my phone gets locked?
A: The lock activates and the screensaver becomes visible after an adjustable period of idle time.
You can set the timeout in the Lock settings/Timeout dialog separately for each flip mode.
Q: How can I lock the phone immediately, without waiting for the timeout?
A: The phone can be manually locked by issuing the Lock command of BigBen.
For additional methods, see the Locking section in the User Guide, and further items in this FAQ list.
Q: Why I can't use the Back key as I usually do to lock my P1?
A:
If you check the Use device lock option, then using any of the phone's normal lock mechanisms will put BigBen in foreground in locked state.
Note that if you have this option unchecked, and use both BigBen and the built-in lock simultaneously, then you will need to unlock your phone twice: once for BigBen, and once for the phone's own lock.
Q: What does the View lock option mean?
A:
When View lock is on, the phone gets locked whenever you launch BigBen or switch to it, for example from the Main menu, or by using a shortcut icon.
You may want to enable this option once you have configured BigBen for the long term, so you can use it for routinely lock faster.
Q: Is the power key is disabled?
A:
When BigBen is coupled with the built-in lock, the power key is disabled.
On the other hand, if the Use device lock option is unchecked, then the power key is not disabled. In this case BigBen re-locks over the power dialog if you do not dismiss it.
If in this state the power key is pressed again, the phone reboots.
Unlock
Q: How do I unlock the phone?
A: To quickly deactivate the lock, press the Confirm key (jog dial inwards) twice.
The first press brings up the Unlock menu whose first item is Unlock.
This works in both flip modes.
In flip open mode you can also display the menu by touching the bottom-left corner of the screen.
For additional methods, see the Unlocking section in the User Guide, and further items in this FAQ list.
Q: Can I unlock the phone without pressing keys?
A:
Touching the bottom-left corner of the screen brings up the Unlock menu,
except when the Use device lock option is checked, and you activated the lock using one of the built-in triggers.
Q: Why do I have to unlock the phone twice, once with BigBen and also with the built-in lock?
A: When the lock was activated using the built-in mechanisms (either manually or automatically)
then you will need to deactivate the built-in lock with its own unlock method.
If the phone was also locked by BigBen at the same time, then it will require unlocking in a separate step.
You can couple the two locking mechanisms by checking the Use device lock option.
Q: How to protect my phone from being easily unlocked by others?
A:
Switch off the Unlock help option in Screen settings/Text, so that someone picking up your phone does not get an easy clue about how to unlock.
Reminders
Q: What are the big C and S letters that I see sometimes on the screensaver?
A: C stands for missed Call, and S is for incoming SMS (or other message type).
In addition, E is displayed for incoming Email, and A for Alarm.
These visual indicators are shown by the screensaver to remind you about unattended events.
You can view the missed events as soon as you unlock the phone.
You can also set audible reminders for these events in the Alert settings/Reminder dialog.
Q: What if I want to be reminded about SMS only?
A: In the Alert settings/Event dialog uncheck any event type that you don't want to be notified about.
Q: Can I set reminders for files received by bluetooth or infrared?
A:
Yes. Beamed files are set together with SMS in the Alert settings/Event dialog,
and also indicated by an S letter when received.
Actually, the S indicator is for any kind of message, except Email.
Q: Can I switch off all reminders for a while?
A: Yes. In locked state bring up the Unlock menu and toggle the Remindersoption.
Q: I have some unread SMS, so why does BigBen not show the reminder?
A:
It is important to realize that BigBen's reminders are intended to warn you about new events that came in while the phone was unattended.
The reminders do not serve as a checklist of all earlier events, therefore the missed calls and unread messages that arrived before you last attended your phone are not indicated.
Sounds
Q: How can my phone make a signal every hour?
A: BigBen can do this for you.
Set the Hourly chime option to other than Silent in the Alert settings/Time dialog.
Q: How can I change the hourly chime?
A: Bring up the Alert settings/Time dialog, and in Hourly chime select the Find sound option.
Choose any sound file that you want to play every hour.
Q: How can I activate sounds?
A: Display the Alert settings dialog.
Make sure that reminders are enabled, and the sound option is set to something else than Silent.
Also see if the active sound times are correct, and if all required events are checked.
Q: How to silence the sounds when I sleep?
A:
To define a narrower time range for sounds, invoke the Alert settings/Time dialog,
and change the active time interval within which sounds are played.
Q: Why I can't hear sound when I have a missed call?
A:
In the Alert settings/Reminder dialog check if the Enable option is on,
and the Sound option is set to something else than Silent.
Options present in the Event and Time pages of the same dialog also influence how you are warned about events.
